Nora is the sort of woman who buys flowers on her way to meet you, not as a gift, simply because the stall looked too good to pass. Honey blonde hair falls well past her shoulders, her hazel eyes carry flecks of gold, and her 166 cm frame is athletic from long days outdoors. She dresses in sun-kissed resort glamour even in the middle of W1: a silk shirt dress, gold hoops, a woven bag and a glow that seems to last all year. In her mid twenties and full of spirit, she lights up a hotel lobby.

There is an adventurous streak beneath the polish. Nora will try the dish nobody orders, take the side street instead of the main road, and say yes to a spontaneous glass of champagne at four in the afternoon. Fashion design is her training and her eye, so she notices how a jacket is cut long before she notices the label. Flower markets are her Sunday ritual. Her English is warm and expressive, and she has a way of making plans sound like invitations.

Afternoons with Nora lead to Liberty on Great Marlborough Street, the Tudor revival department store with a florist at its door and fabric floors she could wander for hours. She will show you her favourite prints, buy a single stem for her lapel, and then steer you towards an early glass of champagne nearby as the Carnaby lights come on. From there, an easy walk back to your hotel before dinner, the flower still perfectly in place.

Arrival evenings are welcome, though a day of notice suits Nora best; she comes from Paddington, a quick ride from Oxford Circus. Give booking your hotel and landing time and she will plan the champagne.

04 · The evening

An evening with Nora

Nora's favourite booking is an arrival evening. You land, you check in, and at six she is in the lobby with a small bunch of ranunculus for the room and a plan. First a walk to shake off the flight, through the side streets behind Regent Street where the boutiques are still open. Then a glass of champagne, properly cold, in a bar she chose because its lighting flatters tired travellers.

She is lively without ever being overwhelming, telling stories about fabric fairs and flower sellers while you slowly remember what time zone you are in. Dinner is optional. Back at the hotel she puts the flowers in a water glass, slips off her sandals and makes the room feel like somewhere you actually live.

// In her words

Because a hotel room without them looks like an office. One small bunch of ranunculus fixes that immediately, and it makes me happy too.

The cut of the jacket, honestly. Then the smile. The label comes last and is always the least interesting part.

In Soho it is practically encouraged. A single glass at four is how an ordinary afternoon becomes a story.
