Two companions, one evening, one arrival time

A duo is two names on the same booking, arriving together at the same address at the same hour. It is asked for most often for a long night out, where a pair carries an evening more easily than one person can, and occasionally for a dinner where the table is four rather than two.

The arithmetic is the least mysterious part. Two companions means two figures from the same card, so two hours with a pair is £500 each and nothing further. There is no duo supplement, no combined rate and no separate price list, and any house that produces one at the point of booking is inventing it.

How a pair is chosen

You can name both, name one and let the host suggest the second, or describe the evening and let the house propose a pair outright. The last is usually the best result, because the hosts know which companions actually enjoy each other's company and which have simply never met. A pair who are genuinely friendly makes an evening, and two strangers politely sharing a table makes a long night for everybody. Say which of the three approaches you want and the reply comes back inside 10 to 15 minutes.

Pairs the host suggests first

Tiffany and Luna work well together, one local to the postcode and one who brings dark auburn colour and easy laughter to a table. Bianka and Roxi are the other standing suggestion, both in their early twenties and both good in a loud room. Any other combination from the guest list can be asked for, and the host will tell you honestly whether the two of them have met before rather than pretending every pairing is a friendship.

Where a duo actually works in Soho

A pair is better out than in. The lanes around Leicester Square and the rooms along Old Compton Street absorb a group of three without anybody glancing twice, and a late supper in Chinatown at one in the morning is the version regulars keep coming back to. Hotel rooms work less well simply as a matter of furniture, since most Soho rooms are small and three people in one of them is a squeeze. If the evening is staying in, tell the host and she will ask about the size of the room.

Timing, and why it matters more with two

Two diaries have to line up, which makes a duo the booking least suited to a message sent at midnight. A day's notice transforms what is possible. Both companions arrive together rather than separately, because two women arriving at a hotel ten minutes apart is considerably more conspicuous than two arriving at once. The deposit is the standard quarter, calculated on the total of both figures, and the balance is settled once on arrival rather than twice.

What a duo evening is and is not

It is two people's company for an agreed number of hours, at a table, in a bar, at a show, or in a sitting room with a bottle of something good. Fees are for time and companionship only, and that wording does not change because the booking has two names on it rather than one. The host will answer any question about what an evening involves before you book, plainly and without theatre, and the frequently asked questions page covers the ground most guests want covered.

Extending, or shortening, on the night

Extra hours are agreed in the chat at the card rate and depend on both diaries rather than one, so they are less often possible than with a single booking. If one companion has to leave earlier than the other, and occasionally that happens, the host says so at the point of booking rather than at eleven o'clock. Cancellation follows the ordinary rule, free with three hours notice and half inside two, applied once to the whole booking.

Duo bookings, asked at the door

Short, plain answers. Anything else, the host takes by message at any hour.

No, and nor is there a surcharge. Two companions are two figures from the published card, so two hours with a pair is £500 each. Nothing else is added at any stage.

Yes. Name both and the host checks the diaries, or name one and ask for a suggestion alongside her. The reply will tell you honestly whether the two have worked an evening together before.

A day is comfortable and an evening is often workable. Same hour duo bookings are the hardest thing to arrange, because two diaries have to be clear at once rather than one.

Always, unless you specifically ask otherwise. Two guests walking into a lobby together attract far less attention than two arriving separately within a few minutes of each other.
